Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens is an American singer and rapper better known under her stage name, Queen Latifah. Queen Latifah's work in music film and television has resulted in her receiving the Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award Six additional Grammy nominations an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah is the daughter of Newark New Jersey native. Her parents were Lancelot Sr. as a police officer as well as Rita teacher at Irvington High School. The couple divorced when Latifah was ten. Latifah was raised within the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. Latifah is an Arabic word which means "delicate and gentle". Her cousin gave it to her at the age of eight. Being a tall girl, her height of 5'10 inches Latifah was a forward for her high school basketball team. She performed the song "Home" from The Wiz during a play at her highschool. Latifah started beatboxing for the group known as Ladies Fresh. Latifah was member of the Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who were joined by the producer DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King, recorded an audition recording of Queen Latifah's song Princess of the Posse. He sent the recording to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was enthralled by the track. The singer signed Latifah and dropped her debut single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
